Football quackers – dynamic ducks refuse to play ball in Euro 2020 predictor challenge

The resident ducks at a Northamptonshire electrical, plumbing and heating business tasked with predicting England’s progress in EURO 2020 have gone walkabout.

Mother and daughter Mercedes and Blondie are not playing ball with the challenge they have been set by owners RK Electrical Mechanical Services to predict England’s progress in Euro 2020 by eating their favourite pre-match snack.

The duo are known for showing erratic behaviour during egg-laying season (March to July) and it is believed Mercedes has gone off to nest.

Kye Bishop, Business Development Manager, said: “We got off to a good start with the pair both predicting a win for England in their opening match against Croatia, however soon after mum Mercedes was nowhere to be found and we believe she has gone off somewhere to nest.”

It was hoped the challenge would liven up the leisurely days they spend around the grounds of RK Electrical Mechanical Services’ head office at The Old Poultry Farm in Desborough, whilst boosting the morale of staff at the family-run firm.

The pair were tasked with eating their favourite pre-match snack from a bowl marked with the two participating countries.

Whichever bowl was eaten from first indicated the match winner. If both bowls were eaten from at the same time it indicated a draw.

Kye Bishop, Business Development Manager, said: “Mercedes has been with us since we moved to our Desborough site in 2019 and Blondie arrived last year. They have their own purpose-built pond and shelter and are free to roam the grounds.”

Initially welcoming two drakes and a duck, it was no surprise during the first coronavirus lockdown in March 2020 when the brood grew to 10.

Kye added: “The majority of the brood were re-homed including the original drakes, Will and Martin. The original duck was kept along with one of her offspring.”

RK Electrical Mechanical Services took to social media to ask their followers to name their two remaining ducks – Mercedes and Blondie.

Kye added: “Whoever said never work with children and animals was right. It was great to be able to treat the ducks to a special treat for England’s opening game against Croatia but now we’ll let nature take its course.”
